Bret J. Barrett

Bret J. Barrett has created some of the most ineffable work we have ever seen. The inability to attach words to the experience of his kinetic works leaves writers stumped but viewers delighted.  Now, with his most thematically consistent work to date, all the inspiration of a dream, he says, literal images appear and transport us miles and miles further into his alter-reality. Animals and vehicles morphed, painted with a technique for maximum three dimensional illusion, an effect that implies motion out of the two dimensional into space. Plus matching kinetic and sculptural pieces. Deliberate anthropomorphism. Living things and gas machines. Static forms from a kinetic artist? Is he pointing out the incongruous nature of humans’ perceived needs and the impact on the other beings in the environment? Or, are these just fun paintings for us to enjoy as we move about our lives?
